The Fascists enlisted Franco so they could get some world wide support. The real culprits were the Catholics versus the Protestants. The Fascists controlled the rural areas and used that to starve out the Cities. Both sides were extreme. Much moreso than anything in the United States.

The end results was that the Nazis of Germany and the Fascists of Italy had much, much better equipment than the socialists. And those pilots were not spaniards, they were Germans and Italians using it to hone their equipment in 1936 in combat. The BF109 made it's maiden combat flight in Spain. It had cannons versus the Italians Biplanes with rifle machine guns.
