The Political Left in America has, wittingly or not, raised the notion of "equality" to the level of a moral imperative, and in the process it has left rational thought in its wake.
A "news" story floated on NPR (I believe it was) yesterday purported to be about the "problem" of "Black" female students constituting only 15% of K-12 public school students in the U.S., but being the recipients of more than half of the disciplinary actions for misconduct.
Hmmm.
Is the "problem" that such students are disproportionately violent? Is the problem that they lack strategies for peaceful conflict resolution? Is the problem the fact that they are predominantly raised in single-parent homes with minimal parental involvement?
Of course not.
The "problem," speaking candidly, is that this difference in disciplinary activity MUST be the result of racism, because it is a GIVEN that all girls are EQUALLY violent and disruptive.
Hence, the break from reality.
This is just one of thousands of examples of the Left's unwavering embrace of the concept of "equality" in all things.
If certain test scores (e.g., SAT, police aptitude tests) result in a certain ethnic group failing disproportionately, there must be a problem with the test. It couldn't possibly be that that ethnic group is generally less blessed with the skills and/or knowledge that is measured by the tests.
If minorities are virtually unknown in the high-tech positions in Silicon Valley, it couldn't possibly be because they are GENERALLY lacking in the intellectual skills that are valued in that community. Must be racism.
If the average woman earns a salary that is only seventy-couple percent of the average man's salary, it couldn't possibly be because women generally lose years of their most productive career time to child-bearing and nurturing, or that men work more hours and are more willing to travel and relocate for their career advancement, or that women in the professions CHOOSE less lucrative career paths (e.g., pediatrics, nursing, family law, food service), or that men generally do the jobs that are physically demanding and/or dangerous. No, it must be SEXISM.
Beware the pursuit of "equality": it is an insidious campaign that will greatly damage our society.
