I don't recall accounts of "mass suicides" among German people after Hitler's death. As a matter of fact the German propaganda machine had collapsed well before unverified accounts of Hitler's death became available to the German people.

Isn't it likely that the U.S. media was ordered by the FDR administration to treat the rapes and pillage by the Russian hoard as "suicides" to protect the relationship with out Stalinist allies? Maybe that was the plan when COS Marshall held back American Troops to let the Stalinist hoard into to Germany to punish the Nazis. . Hard to to believe bureaucrats in the German regime would choose suicide over liberation.

To be fair, if my country had murdered 27 million Russians and brutally raped millions more ... and those very same Russians were marching into my hometown looking for pay-back... maybe eating a Luger wouldn't seem like such a bad option.

That's high enough to cast doubt on the preposterous notion that Nazi bureaucrats committed suicide because they loved Hitler. Civilians were raped and murdered by Russian thugs and the Allies chalked it up to suicide because the relationship with Stalin was more important than the lives of German citizens. It dovetails with the strange order by COS Marshall that held back American Troops who were ready to enter Berlin to allow wholesale slaughter of anyone connected with the Nazi party by the Russians because the Nazis deserved it.

A lot was going on in those days, including widespread famine and internments, all of which along with defeat would cause a lot of depression. Example:

Japanese Bushido extremists convinced ignorant natives on Japanese held Islands that Americans would commit atrocities if they surrendered so they committed suicide. We all saw the newsreels. Germans had a different mental outlook. There were no German Kamakazi attacks. German bureaucrats had no such loyalty to Hitler that they would have committed suicide rather than be liberated. Maybe Concentration Camp guards and ranking Nazis and genuine war criminals decided to commit suicide rather than face trial and the noose but it's likely that the "suicide" statistics in Germany were really murders mostly committed by the Russian hoard.
