CBS News reports, "Baghdad — An estimated 6,000 angry Iraqi protesters gathered at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday, railing against deadly U.S. airstrikes this week that killed 25 fighters from an Iran-backed Shiite militia in Iraq. Shouting "Down, Down USA!," several dozen managed to get into what a senior U.S. official described to CBS News as a reception area just outside the compound after scaling a wall."

First, some background is in order. In May 2018 Trump removed the U.S. from the Iranian nuclear agreement, or JCPOA, which permanently barred Iran from making a nuclear weapon. Trump replaced the agreement with harsh language, threats, and stringent economic sanctions.

Trump's strategy has not worked. Gradually, Iran has been following the example Trump set, violating the JCPOA. Iran has mined and captured ships, destroyed the largest oil refinery in the world, even shooting down a very sophisticated American aircraft.

In addition, Iran has gone beyond the limitations of the nuclear agreement by increasing its nuclear stockpile, enriching uranium at higher levels, and enlarging the number of centrifuges in use. Today, she is much close to making a nuclear weapon thanks to Trump's reckless decision.

Leaving the JCPOA is a foreign policy disaster that threatens our national security and that of our allies. Of that, there is little doubt.

Excluding harsh language and meaningless threats, Trump has done nothing. “The Iranians believe Trump has shown he doesn’t want to go to war,” said Vali Nasr, a former State Department official and a professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. Mr. Nasr said that Iran’s leaders were “making the president realize there is risk and cost to his policy” of crippling sanctions on the country’s economy.

And now this, a siege on the American embassy in Baghdad, an unwelcome holiday crisis for Trump.

Trump's response, still another threat. "Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities," Trump said on Twitter late Tuesday.

"They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat," wrote Trump, adding "Happy New Year!"

Ho-hum, another threat from Trump. Going back to "Fire and fury" and "rocket man" Trump has issued countless threats against other countries and other country's leaders. He has even threatened Americans with higher tariffs and longer trade wars.

He has threaten individual Americans. Pelosi, Schumer, Schiff, Mueller, Comey, Sessions, even the FBI and the Justice Department come to mind. Threats are what Trump does on every day ending in "Y."

However, Trump has shown reluctance to actually do anything. As an example, he spoke by telephone with Iraq’s prime minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, imploring him to help protect Americans in the country.

No one knows how all this will turn out, and there is a strong possibility of an escalation in the violence. Here's hoping our President finally grows a backbone.

Hum somehow the Iran deal went from a ten year ban to permanent?
And you want someone to take anything after that as serious?

A 10 year ban with absolutely NO way to verify they were following it except their word.

Why do you want war with Iran? Are you nuts?

The United States is ranked first in military power by those who keep track of such things. I may look for the link later.

Iran is ranked fourteenth.

Now, I would of course prefer no war, but if push comes to shove, I have faith that Trump will not limit himself to an ineffectual proportional response.

It would be great if our criminal government would just protect the homeland and leave the rest of the world alone.

The Washington Examiner reports, "Four rockets hit an Iraqi military base near Baghdad airport on Thursday evening, according to reports.

"Tensions have escalated in the area over the past week after Iran-backed protesters surrounded the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, shouting, "Death to America," and setting fires to the building on New Year's Eve.

"Urgent Iraqi security sources: The explosions were caused by the fall of 3 missiles in the back area of Baghdad Airport," tweeted Al Jazeera, according to a Google translation. The base where the rockets landed is a joint U.S./Iraqi counter-terror center.

"The four rockets are believed to have targeted the military airport’s runway, an Iraqi counter terrorism center, a building used by the U.S. military, and a road outside the Baghdad airport.

"The airspace above Baghdad International Airport appears to be closed and U.S. helicopters have been spotted flying in the area."

The question is, what will Trump do now?

In response to the siege on the American embassy in Baghdad, he stated, "Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE! This is not a Warning, it is a Threat."

This is what happens when you play with fire.

Trump opened a Pandora's Box. In May 2018 Trump removed the U.S. from the Iranian nuclear agreement, or JCPOA, which permanently barred Iran from making a nuclear weapon. Trump replaced the agreement with harsh language, threats, and stringent economic sanctions.

Before this gets out of hand, Trump, for the first time must say he made a mistake. He must restore the JCPOA the way it was before he destroyed it. Restoring the Iranian nuclear agreement will mean the return of the permanent ban on nuclear weapons. That, in turn, means the harsh economic sanctions are no longer necessary. They can be removed and everyone will be happy. That is all Iran wants.

The only cost? It is necessary, in one form or another, for Trump to admit he made a mistake.

What Trump is doing is far better than the bend-over and take it in the ass that Obama was promoting... Obama even gave them 150 billion so they could keep poking us in the ass... Appeasement is surrender... Screw that!

Who is Trump's speechwriter? Well, he needs a new one.

“We are a peace-loving nation and my administration remains firmly committed to establishing peace and harmony among the nations in the world,” Trump said that right after he ordered the killing of the second most powerful man in Iran, second only to the Ayatollah, sparking certain retaliation from Iran.

Next comes a remarkably presumptuous statement. “We do not seek war, we do not seek nation-building, we do not seek regime change." What laughable remark.

"We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war." Good Lord, what an innocuous statement. I wonder if Admiral Yamamoto said that after leading the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Of course, Trump always speaks solely to his base. They lap this stuff up.

Trump said that he ordered a precision strike to "terminate" a top Iranian commander who was plotting "imminent and sinister attacks" on Americans.

Americans have a problem with that statement, a few actually.

First, is Trump believable? No, he is not. Americans can no long trust anything he says. As of Dec. 10, his 1,055th day in office, Trump had made 15,413 false or misleading claims, according to the Fact Checker’s database that analyzes, categorizes and tracks every suspect statement he has uttered. It is at the very least up to 16,000 lies by now.

Moreover, Trump gave no details of this plot, and neither did his SecState, Pompeo. The Pentagon simply said that Soleimani was targeted to prevent future atrocities.

No one is asking for sources and methods, but what was the nature of the "imminent and sinister attacks." What was the target, and how imminent? More importantly, how will taking out Soleiman prevent the plot from happening? Aren't there other commanders who can take over the mission? Isn't it possible that the killing of the second most powerful man in Iran will propel that nation to complete the mission?

There are no such details from the Trump administration, only pious statements that we are a peace-loving nation.

Americans ask these questions because this has all happened before. Our great American hero, Trump, stymies a plot we have never heard of and never will or investigates corruption by the President's rival that no one, including Trump, knows anything about.

Or, did Trump just want to change the subject?

Thanks to Trump and his rueful decision back in May of 2018 there will be war with Iran, but not the kind one might think. Not a simple war. Iranian ships are not going to attack American ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The Persians are not suicidal, and they are not stupid.

It will be a complex, asymmetric war in which Iran will rely on her proxy forces, not her military. It may even involve cyber warfare, but Iran will retaliate. That is a certainty.

The problem is where, and who will be the targets, Americans or America's allies or both? Will it be the Houthi rebels in Yemen attacking our troops in Saudi Arabia or attacking the Saudi oil fields. The Houthis have done that in the past ... successfully.

Will it be Hamas attacking our interests and that of our Israeli allies on the West Bank?

Will it be Hezbollah attacking simultaneously in northern Israel or Israeli interests in Lebanon?

Will Iran's ally, the murderous dictator, Bashar al-Assad, take part in Iran's war with his army?

As if we haven't had enough problems in Iraq since 2003, then there are the Shiite militias. Tehran hosted and supported a number of powerful Shiite militias that were opposed to Saddam Hussein’s despotic rule. After he was ousted following the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, many of those militias were marshaled to fight U.S. troops.

Those same militia groups now have unprecedented political power in Iraq, with many senior figures winning seats in the country’s parliament. Their presence has given Iran additional influence over Iraq’s political landscape.

In this asymmetric war the U.S. will have a major problem with Iraq.

Some wonder if Trump and his fellow geniuses thought about all this when they decided to take out the Iranian general. Wouldn't it have been much simpler for Trump to admit he was wrong, reenter negotiations with Iran, restore the JCPOA, and remove the harsh sanctions that caused this mess.

Sandy, it's too bad you can't see a way to support your country in this crisis.

Sandy, it's too bad you can't see a way to support your country in this crisis.

Country or Trump? They are not one in the same.

I am quite concerned about my country. Are you? Or are you more concerned about Trump?

How many people will die because Trump wanted to take out an Iranian general?

How many people will die because Trump won't admit he was wrong when he destroyed the Iranian nuclear agreement and imposed harsh sanction on Iran designed to destroy their economy?

How many people will die because Trump was too stupid to understand the proud Persians will retaliate and a disastrous war could be the result?

The Iraq war is a walk in the park compared to a war with Iran. Her military is intact, unlike Iraq's army after the Gulf War and a decade of weapons inspections.

"Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas overwhelming means obliteration," President Donald J. Trump.

NPR reports, "Iran has launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against U.S. military and coalition forces, targeting at least two military bases in Iraq, the U.S. Defense Department announced late Tuesday.

"The strikes on military and coalition personnel at the Ain al-Assad air base in Anbar province and in Irbil — at the center of Iraq's Kurdistan region — began at approximately 5:30 p.m. ET, according to a statement."

“The American people should be extremely grateful and happy. No Americans were harmed in last night’s attack by the Iranian regime. Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned, No American or Iraqi lives were lost.” President Donald J. Trump.

Trump also said he would immediately impose economic sanctions "until Iran changes its behavior," called on other world powers to break away from the Iran nuclear deal and called on NATO to become more involved in the Middle East.

"Soleimani's hands were drenched in both American and Iranian blood. As long as I am president of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon," he vowed.

This is surreal. This is our President. Geez, he is embarrassing. He really thinks this is all a reality show, and he is the hero.
