But Washington was a member of a somewhat sane denomination, Episcopalian. It wasn't some far-out moronic cult like the ones who now are attempting to infiltrate our military, to some degree of success.

In the context of Christianity, they act like normal people. They don't go for craziest and nastiness and distortions like the Southern Baptists and the Assembly of God folks do, and they know when to shut up rather than running their mouths all damned day long.

I like southern Baptists. In my town it was the Episcopalians
and Lutherans who insisted on----"RESTRICTION" The only
blacks I knew back then (ie 'colored people') were in the town
OVER THERE and were Baptists with a slightly southern accent.
When I was a kid----there were Masons in town----on the
"RESTRICTED" town bandwagon.--------a jewish mason was
unheard of. Somehow----a neighbor managed to get the local
eastern orthodox into the masons. Easternstar "ladies" ------
were also big time "restricted town" devotees ------ and freely
used the "N word"---------my mom considered the "N" word-----
the MOST VULGAR word in the world. I do not recall EVER
UTTERING IT ---------Lutherans were generally not as affluent as
THE EPISCOPLIANS -----daughters of the revolution chicks

This is why it is so important to identify people not only by religion, but by denomination within that religion. I grew up with a variety of Christian denominations in the town I grew up in Jersey (the amount of churches downtown is incredible--one for every flavor). If one was Christian and not Jewish, one was a Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox, and nobody was rude enough to encroach on somebody else's territory. But there was a distinct minority of Baptists among the Protestant contingent. I knew just a few Southern Baptists and they were nuts, openly misogynist and racist and running around breaking their kids' rock-and-roll records.

Incidentally, the N-word was absolutely never, ever uttered. Neither were other profanities. I don't think that I heard the f-word until I went to college. Vulgarity was never tolerated there. This is one of the things that shocked me about many posters on USMB. How can someone go on about "God" and religion, and then let loose with N words, C (now K) words, F words all over the place, "qu**r," "f*g," and all the rest of vulgarity while talking enthusiastically about matters involving violence, hatred, and sexual conquest.

In the ensuing years, having seen protestants plastered all over the TV, I have seen evidence of a great split among Baptists. I worked with a wonderful woman who was a Baptist (RIP) for years, and I know that such people as the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Al and Tipper Gore, Roslyn and Jimmy Carter, Rev. Al Sharpton, Bill Clinton (Hillary Clinton is a Methodist), Rev. Barry Lynn were/are Baptists. The Gores and the Carters have separated from the Southern Baptist Convention, and I don't know if the rest of these people were ever affiliated with it. From what I've seen of the Southern Baptists, they are incredible jerks.
