Ms. Schiavo showed signs of feeling pain, showed signs of recognition when her parents came to see her, smiled and made sounds in an attempt to communicate, had facial expressions that were in response to stimuli. The judgement of the lawsuit mentioned was received in 1993, that was split between the lawyers, $750,000 in to a medical trust for her care (which years later was pretty much exhausted so that the government had taken over the care through MediCare), and M.S. had already received the $300,000 as his portion.

That sentiment is not without merit. I'm sure there was relief on the part of her family too. It doesn't excuse how it happened, but it certainly was the end of a long, painful battle.

The settlement was 2 million, the lawyers got about half. $750,000 was setup to pay medical bills, and M.S. received the remaining $300,000. The schism with the parents started shortly after that after refusing to give the parents a cut.

The malpractice case was settled long before the 1998 request to allow Terri's body to not be maintained via artificial means.

The bodies continued existence at that point had nothing to do with a case that had already been settled.
