Teen Sues Parents for Cash and College Tuition. Does She Have a Case?

controlling the nearly adult child is always a cluster **** but it is normally done with money simple as that...when she becomes 18 her parents owe her nothing...her parents owe nothing to her best friends family who took her in....if that had not happened ...the girl and her family may have been able to come to a compromise

That's an excellent point!

Seen that happen several times. And now the second family has an opportunity to make some money off of it.

hmmmmm

You guys don't have all the info.

pretending you do it silly.

You are right...on the initial reading, she sounds like a spoiled brat.....now I want to wait for more info.

I agree.

On the face of it, she's an adult and is/should be responsible for her own bills. But, shes not living on her own. She's living with another family who are supporting her to some extent.

That family agreed to take her in. They have an agreement with the adult 18 year old girl, not her parents

The lawyer father should know better

Well ... As it has been mentioned already ... She has a case.
It is doubtful she could win the suit in court ... But highly probable the matter will be settled out of court.

It is lose-lose either way ... The daughter thinks she is being smart ... Possibly with poor guidance from the encouraging partners financing the endeavor.
If she wins the case ... It won't make her parents take her back.
If she loses the case ... She probably won't go back on her own.

Stupid mistake on the part of whoever told her that suing her parents is a good idea.

.

That would be the attorney she moved in with. :eusa_whistle:

Some day that attorney will dump her, she'll be left scratching her ass wondering what just happened.

The idiot attorney is the fool that took her in. He probably now see her as the selfish brat she is because she wont go home and is now trying to get back at her parents

Legally, what responsibilities do parents have after 18?

Even if the parents are being total pricks, how can the government force you to care for someone they declare to be an adult?

You gonna defy da judge?

His ass should pay for her college.

Unless they informed the HS they were transferring her to a public school, the parents may owe for costs through her graduation since they probably enrolled her there. Beyond that... I don't think the young woman has a chance of getting anything that is not volunteered from the parents.

I don't know what kind of contract the parents have with the school. Whether it is for the year or for the semester and what the conditions are for cancelling

It seems the parents would have to notify the school that they were withdrawing her and that they would no longer be responsible for her bills
