The Mars space probe Maven, sent to Mars just 13 years ago, is now declared dead after 6 months of no response.
The probe was designed for atmospheric studies and reconnaissance, along with offering support for ground probes.
Apparently the probe swung around in orbit 6 months ago just fine, and while out of sight on the far side of its orbit, something went wrong. Data suggests the probe went into a spin for some reason causing the solar panels to fail and the batteries to drain.
Maven is now a write off.
