You can make that much in bank CD or high interest savings accounts on less than $500K on hand.

If your kids rent is $2K in CA and they make $31/hr do the math. It costs $4000 per month to exist in CA if you DO NOTHING (2018). Just SHUP what others may face. I'm all for not paying fees, fines or interest. Heck, I'm even for helping out a family member. Once I hear: "it's not fair" or "it's too difficult" then I limit my help to advice, creating a resume and filling out job applications.
