Actually, we could have a great plan

Instead of trying to renege on legal immigrants to meet a quota, (which is what Trump is currently doing), they should just have the Department of Labor harshly enforce workplace eligibility.

If you are caught employing undocumented immigrants, you get slapped with a big old fine.

But the Republicans don't really want to get rid of illegal immigrants. They just want them scared so the rich can exploit them.

My father was an immigrant, my wife is an immigrant.

Fact is, we could absorb millions of people with no problem. Every consumer is also a producer, so immigrants are good for the economy.

The problem the Global North (the US, Canada, Western Europe, and Japan) faces is that it isn't reproducing at replacement rates. The Global South (Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia) has a surplus population.

Nature abhors a vacuum.
