2. Ukraine fears political retribution for stepping on any of the American toes - they will say make-nice things to both sides, to make sure the substantial political and material aid America is providing them continues. Their government will get crushed by Russia without strong American support.

What they say should be viewed through that prism.

United States and other countries ROUTINELY make material aid to country subject to conditions. Most common of those conditions are certain anti-corruption and human rights initiatives.

There is nothing "black" about threatening to cut aid to Ukraine if they don't clean up their corruption. It is just the opposite - an exmaple of sound foreign policy.

But there is EVERYTHING black about corrupt act of leveraging aid to country for PERSONAL benefit, which is what Trump got caught doing.

He didn't admit that he blackmailed them with aid money. He admited to holding up aid, while telling Ukranians to go investigate his political rivals. Which btw would be abhorent even without any mention of aid. When POTUS asks you something, telling him no has big diplomatic consequences even without any threats.

That is a blatant red flag and more than enough grounds to open impeachment investigation.

With the indirect transcript and whistleblower complaint we have plenty of proof that the aid was in fact directly used as the levarage for the "favors" Trump was asking of Ukraine.
