Brazil is much like the wild wild west in the rural areas. Sure Brazil has laws to make many things illegal but lacks the policing to enforce the laws.

Drugs and poverty are the norm...poaching and endangered species trade are only the tip of the iceberg that goes on in the rural areas. Illegal rosewood harvesting created the capital to corner the vanilla bean market which caused vanilla beans to become outrageously expensive. (Were $20/lb before the market manipulation)

In a lot of ways Brazil is a very nice place....but in a lot of ways it's extremely dangerous as well.
