As Leftists institutions have gradually diminished the importance of standardized testing (e.g., the SAT) in the admissions process, they have lost their ability to accept the Best and the Brightest. This development is mainly the result of the fact that armies of public school teachers have long resented the fact that THEY sucked at standardized tests.

The basic fact remains: The only way to ascertain whether a student has learned anything is a TEST, and the only way to make tests efficacious is to standardize them across the population.

The Everybody-Gets-a-Trophy crowd continues destroying the culture.

Gosh that's really interesting.

Okay.

So some guy aces a TEST on your upcoming heart or brain surgery, but we have no ideas what his skills are.

You trust that? Because I do not.

Hey, good news. Your pilot just aced the FLY A PLANE TEST.

Never flown a plane.

You good with that? Buckle your seatbelt! Fun thread.

Based on this response, you were probably in the lower 25th percentile.
I get it, those memories hurt. That's why we have women and minorities in charge of everything now.
So those memories won't live on in others... that's a girl... drink up...I know it tastes like wood...pretty soon you will sleep...sleeeeep.

Actually I just checked. Way back in the day I took the ACT once, and liked my first score. A 26. Put me in the 86% percentile. Not a genius, but well above average.

(I do not and have never lied here, btw)

The tests need to reflect the actual life experiences of the student and the future needs in society.

Well, it would be nice to know the applicant tested well enough to gain entry into a school to continue on with their studies to be a doctor instead of wasting everyone's time.

But hey:

That's not what the OP said though. He said, and I quote, the test is the ONLY way to ascertain what the student knows/has learned.

Oh man, it just begs to be lambasted, doesn't it?

So then you should understand that testing for aptitude is not the same as testing for competency,

I understand that you exist in a world of female emotion and mainly illusion, but there are measures.

These measures worked for many years before feeeeeeeeeeeelings got in the way.

Gosh, did you miss that because your feelings got in the way? Did you have big feelings about the score you imagined for me?

College admissions, I agree. It is true that test taking does not necessarily measure ability to do the job one would hope to be trained for in college. But it does predict success in test-heavy college courses.

But for elementary through twelfth grade, standardized state testing is a much greater hinderance to educating children than a benefit. The Cobra Effect dominates the preparation process for these tests and the preparation process takes up a large chunk of instruction time.

The left controls the puclic schools and test scored have declined. They want to cover that up

No, I understood the OP perfectly.

My kick-ass comprehension skills does not mean I should have became a doctor.

Well then no need for medical residency. If the student can pass the test--which the OP says is the ONLY way to ascertain what a student has learned--then good to go.

Imagine passing a test on heart surgery and then cracking open a chest cavity and going at it. Well, there it is. Doesn't matter what the senior doctors observed during residency; the student passed the test.

I took both....SAT and ACT....
Scored similar as SweetSue92 .....
Just under the lines of getting academic scholarships....
And for GenX....that meant the cost of tertiary education was going to be high....if you could somehow find a way to pay for it.
And affording college was tough. Jobs were not that plentiful. The same exact jobs that often go unfilled today....because there are not enough young people to go around.

Paying for bonehead English classes....
Paying for bonehead math classes.....
Totally DUMB....they taught this stuff for free in High school....but if you didnt learn it there you now gotta pay to learn it again.

But now....
Colleges are dumbing down educations? Graduates unable to read or write?
But put young people in > $100k debt?
Figures....faith in the system is just about gone.

I often wondering why college is still done the way we did it, back before the internet. Getting information in those days was slow, labor-intense, and often required multiple steps. Now you can get information at the snap of your fingers.

So rather than have college be a continuation of Getting Basic Knowledge, it should be used just as an intensive in your chosen field. IMO, fwiw....not much

You are just torqued that I understood what the OP was saying and you didn't.

Best you just leave it be. 😐

You are correct.

But I don't understand how you derived

So some guy aces a TEST on your upcoming heart or brain surgery, but we have no ideas what his skills are.

From this...

The basic fact remains: The only way to ascertain whether a student has learned anything is a TEST, and the only way to make tests efficacious is to standardize them across the population.

What does 'skill' have to do with the standardization of testing?
By skill, do you mean hand-eye coordination and task qualification gained through residency?

Two different arguments.
Yours makes no sense and is grounded in pointless, useless female emotion.
You fear standardization because you know it will confirm what you already know.

Some groups are simply inferior to others at certain things.

I used to do well on standardized tests
Much of it was test taking skills not mastery of the subject

Time management
Probability
Eliminate wrong answers
Plug in answers to math problems
Educated guessing

So i gotta ask....is there a metric that exists that validates competency?
