The truth of the matter is that Lincoln is the one to really blame.....if he had let the South Secede and then ended slavery gradually and peacefully America would be Number One in every respect today. In fact we would have been so strong that all the World Wars could have been prevented.

The American Holocaust (The War Between The States) severely weakened America (over 600 thousand killed) more than in all other wars combined and we never really got over it, in fact that war settled nothing--the issue of local control aka states rights vs. the Federalis is pertinent as ever.

What we are witnessing today is the emergence of a Totolitarian form of government...and Lincoln of course set us on that course, his legacy of a strong central government that has kept accumulating more and more power, to the point today where they are really getting into our personal lives...telling us what to eat, what to think, what we can say, what we cannot say, etc. and so on and so forth.

Are you a paid intern at the Ministry of Truth or simply someone who hopes to become a famous blogger? Good luck, I suspect the society of trolls will find you a bit too fatuous even for them.

slavery was never going to "naturally" end. while it is a nice thought it is a fantasy to think that people who chose death and treason over freeing their slaves were going to give them up. what I blame Lincoln for is not letting them go. the neo-confederate insurrectionists are the problem in this country today -- still fighting the same race-based battle over "states rights" and posse comitatus.... go ask bundy and his armed thugs

Slavery would have ended with the advent of the cotton gin...avoiding the war...but not the disgrace of the institution. Whites need to understand the experience...and blacks need to get over it. It will be a while...but if every white man would befriend a black man we would get there sooner.

Why stop there?

The Floundering Fathers KNEW that slavery couldn't last. But they could not find a solution in 1775 OR 1789 so they left that wound to fester until it erupted into a blood poisoning war that damned near killed the Republic.

if he had let the South Secede

he would have betrayed his oath of office

and then ended slavery gradually

Never would have happened. You doubt that? Jim CROW (slavery by another name) lasted for another nearly 100 years after that bloody conflict.

and peacefully America would be Number One in every respect today. In fact we would have been so strong that all the World Wars could have been prevented
.

Wishful projections. Had there been two nations where there is one those nations would inevitably have fought for control over the wealth of the West.

The CIVIL war strengthened the FEDERAL government as the expense of States rights, FOR SURE. On the above I think you are SPOT ON.

I think every POTUS since and beginning with GEORGE WASHINGTON set us on this course.(see the Whiskey Rebellion if you doubt that)

I think the very nature of POWER makes emergence of totalitarianism something that must be fought off constantly.

Why?

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely

I am already quite famous thank you. One man's troll is another man's freedom fighter.

However, thanks for the bump chump.

Sir, with all due respect you appear quite naive.

Slavery would have died out as technology advanced but the War of Northern Aggression was more about other things. Slavery was just a sideshow. Mr. Lincoln needed and wanted a war to further his political career.

Lincoln grossly misunderstood what the nature of a war between brothers would really be like. He had no idea of how terrible it would be...like most stupid yankees he thought it would be over quickly and little suffering involved.

Lincoln's decision to invade the South was the greatest mistake ever made by an American President.

The South had a constitutional right to secede. There is nothing in the Constitution that forbade secession.

The era of Jim Crow could have been entirely avoided if peaceful means had been used to end slavery...Mr. Lincoln with his pen made thousands of Slaves homeless overnight. They had nowhere to go, no money, no provisions and winter coming on, what were they to do?

What does liberty mean to a starving man? The Africans had no choice but to go back doing the same kind of work as before, often under the same masters. Thus the Jim Crow era...entirely Mr. Lincoln's fault.

If allowed to secede the South would have been preoccupied organizing its govenment and building up its trade and economy...the North would have been free to develop the West.

If Lincoln had let the South secede then the right to secede would have been set as a precedent and eventually the United States would have splintered into a new world version of the Balkans.

Appears to me that OP slept through his history classes. Too bad.

I didn't take history in a public school like you. Sir, with all due respect you have been indoctrinated into a myth.

All of the other countries of the world that ended slavery in the 19th century did it peacefully, and that included New England and Ohio and Pennsylvania and Indiana, the northern United States. Why was this not an alternative for America? Why was it only in America where there was a war attached to the ending of slavery? It was possible for us to do what England and Spain and France and Denmark and other countries did, end slavery peacefully.

Some want to Blame Obama...Others Bush

Very simplistic and naive OP, though well meant. Energy and centralization are the twin engines of history. Lincoln, Wilson, FDR, imperialism, colonialism, nationalism, fascism, communism, democracy, capitalism, corporatism are symptoms not causes.

No reason whatsoever to think that. In fact the North and South would most likely have reunited when the North finally realized it must treat the South fairly in regards to tarrifs and taxation .....once cooler heads prevailed and that would have happened if Lincoln had not been of such a imperial mind and had negotiated in good faith with the South.

Jill never thought of that...she never "thinks" about anything.

Liconly was solely responsible for the War Between The States....he could easily have prevented it....even someone as lame as Obama could have prevented it.....bottom line...it was not prevented because powerful forces in the North wanted to punish the South....stupidly unaware(if they even cared)that the whole nation would suffer from it and in fact has never gotten over it.

Except that the Cotton Gin was invented a full half century before the end of Slavery. Next.
