I've never been on any of these programs, but I did ask the manager at the 7-11 off base and he says that he's been doing it for a couple of years.

As far as I know, I thought it was approved.

Don't gimme any crap about how poor people need a balanced diet. As it is these snappers spend all this money on junk food. A diet of staples will be better for them. And MUCH cheaper for the taxpayers. Eating just those 4 staples, a person can live on a dollar a day.

A lot of people on food stamps rent rooms and don't have access to stoves, even if they had cookware, which they usually don't. Some don't even rent rooms. They live in parks, under bridges, in motor homes, etc, or crash with friends. For real. Sometimes cup of noodles and potato chips suffice. If you can find the hot water for the cup of soup. And yes, plenty of bums and freeloaders out there as always, granted. How to figure out the honestly needy from the bums not that easy to do.

The area I live in, you can get fined a couple hundred dollars for sleeping in your car too. Not always easy being poor like some think.

right now there is a big fund raising project to pay lunch fees that have gone unpaid so the kids can continue to get lunches

So many of our kids (over 75%) are eligible for free or reduced lunch that some schools have stopped collecting lunch fees altogether. It's cheaper because they don't have to do the accounting. We also have programs sending home backpacks full of chow on Fridays to get elementary school kids through the weekend. It's sad so many kids need it, but it's great there are so many programs to help.

not enough places to volunteer? y ou would think local hospitals and day cares and old peeps home would welcome volunteers but then you have the issue of background checks....

We only have two hospitals in our county, sixty miles apart. Three or four old folks homes. Background checks can be an issue, but for the most part, the state is so specific about where people can volunteer that those places are chock full of "volunteers." A little community library might be able to take on one or two volunteers, but then you have to have the staff to train and supervise them. One of my students right now is going through that--she is in drug court and they are insistent. So she is doing about 12 hours per week of study with me until something else shakes loose.
