Should the USA allow Greenland to become a territory after it declares freedom from Denmark?

"Trump weighed in on the issue on Dec. 24, posting on Truth Social that “the ownership and control” of the Danish territory was “an absolute necessity."

Hours later, the Danish government announced it would boost defense spending for the island by a “double digit billion amount,” or at least $1.5 billion. The timing of that announcement was an “irony of fate,” according to Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen."

Trump rattles cages to get results. ;)

Greenland is not exactly the "land of plenty" people think it is.

It is a barren, frozen wasteland. Very few people live there for GOOD REASONS. Those who do live there have a high incidence of being the product of 1st cousin marriage. (Because of the lack of people)

They don't do gardening....or a lot of outdoor activities. Hard to pour concrete when it freezes before it cures.

However, the residents often complain about a lack of jobs and resources to make a living. Infrastructure breaks down often in harsh conditions. Public schools? If you can make it in your snowmobile. Long winter nights with only a few hours of sun last well into the summer for when the sun really doesn't set.

Men often die younger up there in the harsh conditions....hypothermia gets a LOT of men.

And once this is done, they may also decide that they don't need the US presence and kick Thule off the island. Denmark is a friendly NATO country. The US already has a base on Greenland. What is Trump trying to gain?

He's always demanded that NATO countries pay their fair share in their common defense. Also, the Russians have been more active in the arctic.

Greenland has as much right to avoid becoming part of a larger nation as Ukraine and Taiwan do. Also, youi are forgetting about Denmark. Denmark has said that Greenland is not for sale. Denmark is part of NATO. A war with Denmark over Greenland would cause Trump, and consequently the United States an enormous amount of trouble. Trump can get away with bullying poor little Panama. He can't do that with Denmark, Canada, or both.

Trump lacks the cult following internationally that he has in the United States. For most of the world he embodies the Ugly American: they see him as brash, arrogant, ignorant, and vulgar.

Has nothing to do with rights....
Everybody has a right to live to a hundred.
It would be very wise for Greenland to partner up with the United States because if not they will forcibly be partnered up either with Russia or China.

The mineral rights, the agricultural rights.
The fishing rights.... There's a lot to gain.

We already have an AFB in Greenland and don’t need more for our security. This is a blatant resource grab, reminiscent of 19th century colonialism. Why would it be beneficial to them? They already have a sugar daddy.
We have wanted to enlarge that base for years... now with space force and a war in Ukraine and war brewing in Asia we need a larger strategic airbase in Greenland than we have today...
Obama spoke of enlarging the base but since he was all talk that's all we got.... talk....

A reminder, they are not for sale. If they were for sale and it was a decent price that would be one thing. Military conquest makes us the same as Russia and China.

I didn't think military conquest should be an option... However that's only as far as we are concerned. It absolutely is an option with the other guys .... 56,000 people over 836,000 square miles is virtually uninhabited.

Greenland is Danish. Daneland is part of NATO.

We already have a base there.

If Russia or China tries to conquer Greenland, we have NATO obligations to help Denmark prevent that.

Greenland would be a tremendously advantageous strategic acquisition.

Fisheries, minerals, energy, being able to put a base there.

Lots of good reasons for Greenland to become a territory like US VIRGIN ISLANDS, GUAM, Samoa, PR…

If Greenland is opf any economic value, Greenlanders will never agree to be a territory of the U.S.

The U.S.V.I., Guam, etc... all became part of the U.S. due to their military strategic locations. Economically they milk the U.S.

Greenland really doesn't have a military benefit since we already have bases there.

That because Greenland is almost completely uninhabitable.
