In a democratic republic society, our laws are a reflection of how we want things to be. And our political system is majority rules. So if a majority thinks they don't want Confederate things visible in public, then those things would get removed (by government, not hoodlum vandals).

By the same token, if a majority said they did not want to have men kissing each other visibly in public, or "Pride" parades, or LGBT flags, then those things also could be banned.

This is NOT a democracy. A democracy acts like you just described: the majority takes away the rights of the minority.

We're a republic. Everyone's rights are equally protected. The majority does not dictate to the minority.
