Because the system used in Vietnam was not the S-200, but the SA-2. And it was a highly capable system, being the same one that shot down a U-2 in 1960.

The funny thing is, North Vietnam and later Vietnam never used the S-200 system. In fact, it was only in the last few decades that any nations outside of the Warsaw Pact even had them. It was the state of the art system of the Soviets and Russia, and as such they were very reluctant to export that system. Which is actually not unusual, as the US also often holds back their best equipment for domestic use only.

But the very fact he could not even bothered to do a lick of research and say it was the S-200 and not the SA-2 GUIDELINE shows how he is mostly just making things up as he goes along.

And the SA-2 is still a rather potent air defense system even today. Over a dozen nations still use it as it is exceptionally fast and has a long range (it was the missile that shot down the U-2 in 1960). And some nations like Iran and China have adapted them into actual ballistic missiles to attack land targets.

My mistake, they were SA-2 Guidelines that used active radar homing. That's why F-105 Wild Weasels routinely killed their command units.
