He fucked it up only insofar as domestic optics back here are concerned, but there was no way that Afghanistan was going to be anything other than a total clusterfuck, and he would have been blamed for whatever happened after we left. He would have been blamed for abandoning the Afghan government and its military and there would have been a refugee crisis all the same.
The humiliating withdrawal was the culmination of more than a solid decade and change of total American political and military hubris, deluding ourselves into believing that we were capable of building a US/Western friendly government there when the last 2 centuries alone would suggest that Afghans will not tolerate foreign occupation, no matter how well-intended we say it is.
