This is called "oppositional behaviour disorder". Those with OPD lack self-confidence and are incapable of discerning what's good for them and what isn't. Their fear and paranoia is the result of this inability, and so their knee jerk response is to oppose all such suggestions.
It's interesting that you consider media which is publically owned, and which subscribes to a journalistic code of ethics in fact checking and verification, "untrustworthy", but believe the billionaire owned media which basically broadcasts whatever their owners tell them.
