Rewatch review.... Deerhunter

I had not watched this show since the first time I saw it on VHS late 80s. Seeing it now in 2021, it just doesn't have the same teeth. We have been desensitized a bit today I think by fantastic special effects and cgi. The shock of the scenes, the grittiness isn't a big deal anymore.
Having said that, this film is a good reminder of how wasted of a talent DeNiro is. Such a great character actor, who abused his own talents on horrible-corny B class movies...one after another.
Watching the film again, it is good....but it's length weighs on you. It's like the editors took the week off and we see every scene in full... with the boring parts included.

I believe in the late 80s when I saw it the first time, I would have rated it probably 4 out of 5 stars.
Today... 3. With the quality of acting as it's only saving grace.

I agree
It hasn’t aged well

Look what happened to Christopher Walkens career since then
For sure, he was good in At Close Range. Love that movie.
Other than that... he is like Nicholas Cage... a couple good films in a parade of bombs.
good call--I think Cage is terrible
Cage is terrible because of his personal life. A hugely wasted talent. Google his financial woes... he just might be the dumbest person in Hollywood in the decisions he made with his wasted $millions. And because of that, he had no choice but to appear in dozens of complete bombs to pay off his massive debts.

I just find him annoying as an actor
I really don’t care about their personal lives but Cage just grates on me.
I used to like Walken, but he just does cartoonish roles now.

Still one of my favorite movies of all time. What did you watch it on?

"Apocalypse Now" came out about the same time.
It is a great movie in many ways also.
"The Deer Hunter" had a good plot, actors and director and it had some unforgettable scenes.
They are both great Vietnam War movies.
.....I don't think DH was as much of a war movie as it was telling the tale of the affects of war/people's thoughts/etc...there's a lot of '''non-war'' stuff in it
.....Apocalypse Now was based on the novel Heart of Darkness--set in the Vietnam War--not really about the ''war''
How would you rate "Full Metal Jacket" compared to TDH and AN?

......a lot worse--because of the actors, later on in the movie and the idiotic dialogue ...Mathew Modine sucks--in all his movies
....the BootCamp part was pretty good---I was in the USMC for 8 years

..I usually look up the actors of movies I watch--but, since I don't watch him, I never did..but I will now ..TY
Trust me... reading about his financial bungles will entertain you more than any film he was in.
It is hard to believe he is this dumb.
he bought not one but TWO castles!!!???!!!!
As well as he spent $276,000 on a stolen dinosaur skull... that he said he didn't know was stolen, and had to give it back to the museum it was stolen from. Think Michael Jackson'isk spending habits, but without $millions a month in revenue to replenish his accounts.

I will interject... In my opinion the movies are hard to compare, because really the only thing they have in common is the backdrop (Vietnam War)
They are completely different films. Apocalypse Now is this fantastical, almost horror-like film experience. Deeply psychological and menacing. (as well as fantastic cinematography)
TDH is really a story of the comradery of life-long friends, who go through the nightmare of war. FMJ is like the worst nightmare stories of the worst things that could happen to a soldier. In my opinion, FMJ has the best scene of all.... a scene that everyone knows. But the best overall film is Apocalypse Now.

....IMO FMJ is ridiculous regarding dialogue and combat scenes ..it's a lot more for teens/amateurish/etc

I will check that out thanks. I have the book and read it every few years. I read Don Quiote once a year. Looking forward to some Deer hunter

And by the way - IMO - Platoon is the best Vietnam movie hands down. I will never forget when my brother and I went to go see it in the theater. When the movie was over... no one was talking. You could have heard a pin drop. As if it was disrespectful to the film to start your life again that soon. It was the first of it's kind. And changed how war movies were made to this day. Not to sound corny, but it wasn't just a movie. It was an experience. Like you were with the guys fighting.

Honestly if it wasn't for the opening scene... I don't think it would resonate with most folks. Including myself

AN had a lot great dark humor in it.
FMJ was full of left wing BS.
TDH was the best of the three, but nowadays DuhNiro is on my do not watch list.
But, I would say that FMJ is the most popular of the three movies.

No kidding... I like your coin "DuhNiro"... much like Sean Penn, neither one should be in adult conversations. They are both as dense as they come.
As to the left wind messaging in FMJ, yes it was certainly present... even obvious, as it painted military brass as a band of idiots... and soldiers as maniac blood thirsty robots.

Deer Hunter was released to American movie audiences way back when "shock value" in big budget films was still something of a novelty. In fact, much of the central dramatic theme of Deer Hunter is watered down by the director's/writer's damnable efforts to shock audiences who were unused to surprise moments of gore and death. The reason this film has lost its "teeth" with modern audiences is because modern audiences have been desensitized to shock gore, death, sex, whatever. I also agree about the running time. The movie or the script or whatever is just too in love with itself; it is nothing more than yet another Hollywood strange culture echo chamber. But . . . it was okay the first time around.

Indeed, which must be why after all these years I had not elected to watch it again till now. I remember thinking it was a pretty good movie, but not able to remember it really.
I agree with you that the film's biggest problem, is like I said, seemingly the editors took the week off so we got everything.

The Deerhunter is a great movie but tough to watch at times. Apocalypse Now is a film with some great set pieces but it loses its way when Brando enters the scene. Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are both great films. I have never seen a film from the Vietnamese perspective. That would be interesting.
