If an epidemic is not very lethal, like covid-19, then you do accelerated herd immunity.

Flattening the curve is not one of the possible choices because it just delays, and that allows the epidemic to spread deeper and wider, solving nothing.

So if you go back to what Trump said, it was to pretty much ignore the epidemic, which is the herd immunity strategy.
And that would have saved over half a million lives.
The epidemic would have burned out last March, with fewer than 60k deaths.
Technically the best is to deliberately infect those volunteers you are least likely to have problems.
You can then theoretically end the epidemic in less than 3 weeks.

If you examine all of Trump’s decisions, a pattern quickly becomes apparent: All of Trump’s decisions were based on ensuring maximum profit for Big Pharma and the medical industrial complex from the pandemic. Starting with his decision to sell ALL of the US stock piles of PPE to China in January, keeping none for domestic use.

Trump could have gone with the WHO covid test, but there would be no big profit for American pharmaceutical companies unless they developed their own tests and owned exclusive rights to the patent. So they did that around for three months and still didn’t have a proper testing system, while 400,000 Americans travelled from China back to the USA with no testing.

But the problem was that Fauci did get almost everything wrong.
Because he did not count the asymptomatic, he got the lethality wrong by a factor of 100, and he got the number who need to acquire immunity to achieve herd immunity wrong by at least a factor of 3.
Then he also got herd immunity deaths wrong by another factor of 200 by not differentiating by age.
Fauci pushed flattening the curve, and that really is not an option.
That maximizes death totals by giving the epidemic more time to spread.

Republicans played games with the numbers trying to minimize the severity of the outbreak. Trump tried using "deaths to total cases" - for your death rate which is your "didn't count asymptomatic" bullshit. You only use "resolved cases" not total cases.

Right now, you have 5.5 million active cases. You don't use them in your death rate because you don't know how these cases will turn out, and it gives a false death rate, since 550 of those people are still dying every day. Your death rate based on resolved cases is 2.1% which is a not bad at all.

Your problem is that you allowed 34 million people to get sick. That's 10% of the US Population. It would take 7 times the 600,000 who have died, to achieve herd immunity without a vaccine.

Every country which "flattened the curve" had a much lower rate of disease and death. Canada has a death rate of 1.8%, but then we have a healthier population to begin with. We also have a death per million of population rate that is nearly 1/3 of that of the USA.

Countries that REALLY flattened the curve - like New Zealand and Australia, had 5 and 35 deaths per million of population. The USA has over 1,800 deaths per million of population, so take your lies about the numbers and stick them up your ass.
