Trump contradicts campaign manager on immigration

Trump also denied that he was "softening" on immigration, instead saying "people" are calling it a "hardening."

However, he did say to Cooper that "you know it's a process. You can't take 11 [million people] at one time and say 'boom, you're gone.'"

He denied that his policy mirrored vanquished primary foe Jeb Bush's, saying "I don't know anything about Jeb Bush. He wasn't building a wall."

Bush's former staffers told POLITICO that Trump has "basically taken the Bush position" on immigration.

KATRINA PIERSON, TRUMP CAMPAIGN NATIONAL SPOKESPERSON:Absolutely. That part of the policy has not changed. Just not using those same words. Those words actually came from a journalist that sort of carried in to Mr. Trump's policies. He absolutely wants illegal aliens to leave the country and get in line as you heard Kellyanne Conway just state. We have to secure the border. This is not just about immigration. This is about human trafficking. This is about drug trafficking. These are things that affect American citizens on a daily basis.

"No citizenship. Let me go a step further -- they'll pay back-taxes, they have to pay taxes, there's no amnesty, as such, there's no amnesty, but we work with them," Trump told conservative commentator Sean Hannity.
Those comments may not go over well with the Republicans and conservatives who were drawn to Trump's tough immigration policies.
Right-wing commentator Ann Coulter, author of the just-released book "In Trump We Trust," reacted disapprovingly to the GOP nominee's latest shift.
"It's not 'amnesty.' It's 'comprehensive immigration reform'!!!" Coulter tweeted, referring to the failed 2013 Senate legislation.

Jeb Bush: Many illegal immigrants come out of an ‘act of love’

April 6, 2014
Former Florida governor Jeb Bush said Sunday that many who illegally come to the United States do so out of an "act of love" for their families and should be treated differently than people who illegally cross U.S. borders or overstay visas.
