Republican politicians lie when they say they want to stop deficit spending

God, you people are so partisian, you can't even determing what's in your own best interest. Pay as you go, doen'st give Democrats the authority to do anything they can't pay for. There are enough republicans and moderate democrats to stop liberals and progressives using the tax code willy nilly.

You guys need to wake up. And I've got to say, it was the scrapping of Pay as you go by the GOP that cleared the way for Dubya's tax cuts and his drug bill; because they didn't have to figure out to pay for them

Think how different it would have been if Dubya had to come up with $350 billion is spending cuts at the same time he gave the rich their tax cut. There would be no deficit. No deficit means that pulling the economy from the brink of disaster would not have been as expensive. And who knows, if they had paid for all of their great ideas, the economy may not have run off the cliff at all!!

I don't know why they don't get it. Pay As You Go is self explanatory.

There's nothing in it that says raising taxes is the way to go. Spending only what we have is how it was done during the Clinton years. That's what we need to get back to.

What the Queen said.

That is THE essiential first step in ever hoping to reduce the actual national debt.

Yep cut off all federal spending for State and local prisons and jails.

Cut off all federal education spending.

Federal highway spending.

Fire, police, Air traffic controlers and TSA.

Federal education subsidies.

FDA, Health research, Vaccinations, We did n't need that pesky Polio vaccine anyway.

If the Federal government is still funding research for polio vaccines we have serious problems.

As for the rests, there is a reason state governments exist.

pay as you go is all about raising taxes to match spending. Spending itself isnt cut. How about we just restore the Republic and cut the programs the Constitution never authorized to begin with?

No, pay as you go is about ending deficit spending.

Congress cannot spend money without paying for it, like the way it was done during the Clinton admin. Bush ended that policy and spent wildly on 2 wars, medicare drug entitlement and tax cuts for the rich. That's why we have an 11 trillion dollar debt. It was 5 trillion when Bush took office.

The tax cuts for the rich will expire this year and go back to what it was under Clinton. That will help cut the deficit.

The Iraq war will end. That will help cut the deficit.

Don't vote Republican unless you want to end pay as you go.

If you like deficit spending, vote Republican.

And tell me, do you think they are going to raise taxes, or cut spending? Hmmm, I cant imagine we would ever know.

There's nothing in it that says raising taxes is the way to go. Spending only what we have is how it was done during the Clinton years. That's what we need to get back to.

But what you don't get is that there is nothing in this legislation that says we will 'spend only what we have' now. And we have a majority in Congress and a President who are just itching to raise taxes.

So as long as they are gung ho to pass a 3.6 trillion budget AND cap and trade AND healthcare reform, none of which is included in that 3.6 trillion budget which anybody with a brain knows will hugely swell the deficit unless much more revenue is taken in. . . .

. . .Don't you think it prudent to clear up a few things before passing a 'pay as you go' legislation?

The devil is always in the details, and if the Congress authorizes a bunch of new expenditures and doesn't have the funds to pay them, which do you think they are more likely to do? Cut back on those expenditures that are dear to their hearts? Or go after more of the taxpayer's monies to cover them with the justification that the law requires them to cover what they spend?

Do you trust them to cut expenses?

I don't.

One of the things that really turned me off of the Republican party and made me an Independent was its active participation in and its promoting willful ignorance about the deficit. I mean, we all know that Democrats are fiscally irresponsible, but do we need two parties happily trashing the nation's finances?

It certainly ranks of hypocrisy to hear the GOP talk about the deficit, but it is necessary that we have one party that does so, even if it is a party that did nothing but contribute to the mess we are in today. The last good Republican President was George H W Bush, who gets at least partial credit for the budget surpluses of the 1990s by raising taxes, even though his party went kicking and screaming along the way.

But in fairness to both parties, the American public has not grown up. The parties are merely responding to what the American people want, which is more spending and more tax cuts. If you are going to cut taxes, you have to cut spending. If you want to maintain social security and medicare and pay for overseas wars and have a big military, you have to pay for it and raise taxes. The idea that we can have it all and not pay for it is just fantasy that will eventually have dire consequences if not remedied.

I have been in America for 13 years and I love it here, but for the first time since I arrived, I am going to fill out an Alberta tax form to compare what I would pay in taxes up in Canada. If Americans don't find a way to compromise and fix this problem, I am afraid that what we are going through today will be a cakewalk compared to what is coming.

State and local prisons, fire, and police are mostly locally funded and only get Federal money if they're getting some kind of special grant from a program.

Education is also mostly locally funded, but I agree, the Feds should cut out any funding they are providing because they have no Constitutional authority to be involved in education.

Health research and vaccinations aren't within their Constitutional restraints either and a good amount, again, is done by the private sector.

The biggest black hole in Federal spending lies with the military, Social Security, and Medicare. They make up almost 60% of the Federal budget. That's what needs to be scaled back on if the Congress is to be serious about reining in spending.

February 04, 2010 Roll call number 48 in the House Question On Adoption of the second portion of the divided question: H J RES 45 Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act

Ayes: 233 (Democrat: 233; Republican: 0)
Nays: 187 (Democrat: 16; Republican: 171)
Abstained: 14 (Democrat: 8; Republican: 6)

House Roll Call #48 Details - OpenCongress

Republican politicians vote against pay as you go. They apparently like deficit spending.

Right wing sheep - stop believing their lies. They aren't trying to balance the budget. They vote against it.

They are hypocrites and liars.

Hey stupid read the top of the link you posted where it states

H.J.Res.45:
Increasing the statutory limit on the public debt

The republicans did not want to increase the limits on public debt. And I'm glad they voted they way they did. It increases the statutory limit on the public debt from $12.104 trillion to $13.029 trillion.

How does raising taxes and crippling the economy stop deficit spending?

You want to stop deficit spending. Then cut spending.

And yes, there are some Republicans lie about wanting to stop deficit spending. But Id rather vote for someone who promises to lower the deficit then someone who promises to increase it.

You mean you'd rather vote for someone who promises to lower the deficit but votes no when it comes right down to it.

You're a liar lover and you'd rather vote for liars.

Isnrt that what Obama and the democrats ran on? Fixing the mess Bush created? But what have they done since coming into office? Double the debt that was already on the books.

If anyone loves liars it would be the idiot called Queen who is so stupid to believe the lies you tell.

The REPS are fiscal conservative much like the DEMS are defenders of the working class.

They are both Insiders each spinning their own mytholgies about themseleves and the opposing parties that bear almost no relationship to what either of them do when they are in power.

This needs to be explained why?

How can any of us have possibly missed this fact?

The Republicans were not about to sign onto legislation that would give the Democrats license to hike taxes across the board on everything that is and isn't nailed down in this country. When you have a 'pay as you go' system without spending roll backs and a mega-trillion dollar budget with no savings forecast for years ahead, that would have been a sure prescription to completely crash the economy.

The title of a bill doesn't always tell even part of the true story, much less all of it.

We can still hope and pray that we vote out enough irresponsible Democrats and RINOs and vote in enough fiscal conservatives in the next election to give us a fighting chance to recover from the current economic insanity.

That is a ridiculous rationalization.

Pay-as-you-go is just what it says.

You all complain about the deficit, but don't want to take any steps to reduce it.

When Republicans controlled government, they built up 5 Trillion dollars in debt with their endless policies of lowering taxes and spending.

The fact is that tax levels are well below the level for optimum revenue, as dictated by the Laffer Curve, which was the Republican guide to lowering taxes in the first place.

And having higher taxes than we have now didn't "cripple" the economy during the Reagan or the Clinton years. Not to mention during the 40's, 50's or 60's.

Talking about not raising taxes now, during an economic crisis and 2 Wars is just a bunch of populist bullshit.

There was much to criticize President Bush for, but his tax policy was not one of them. Except for financing of Afghanistan and Iraq, we were making our budget and even with the war expense, the deficit was coming down and the budget would have balanced had it not been for the 2008 crash which had nothing to do with taxes and spending.

So what is Obama's excuse? To continue to spend and spend and spend and spend despite deficits rising to the point that we might never fully recover? And now pending legislation that would allow them to continue that while putting no cap on the amount the taxpayer could be soaked, a certain prescription to extend this recession into perpetuity?

I can't imagine how much kool-ade somebody would have to drink to not see both the danger and irresponsibility in that.

That's going to allow government to continue to function for the time being, as tax revenue has decreased dramatically thanks to the economic meltdown.

You can't just cut the budget on the fly, and up and decide not to pay people.

Of course, if you'd like the entire federal government to be frozen, and our troops to go unpaid until the point we can get spending under control, well I guess that's one way to go...

That doesn't even come close to explaining how increasing the limit on our debt reduces spending. Actually it's quite contrary to the reduction in spending, in fact it allows for even more spending.

But lonestar you are about 5 trillion short and 8 years too late.

I understand those partisan blinders do get in the way don't they?
