Wasserman Schultz is again on defense after steadfastly refusing to explain why she continued to employ Imran Awan, an IT staffer who was under a federal investigation for an alleged equipment and data scam in the U.S. House since February. She finally fired him on July 25, one day after authorities arrested him on a seemingly unrelated mortgage fraud charge. He was at the airport leaving for Pakistan, after wiring $283,000 there.


The firing came a full six months after about two dozen House Democrats dismissed four of Awan’s relatives and a friend, all of whom were under investigation with him.

Wasserman Schultz broke her public silence on Awan last week, portraying herself as the victim of “right wing media” attacks rooted in anti-Muslim bigotry aimed at Awan and the IT group.

But fellow Democrats are as confounded and disbelieving as ever by her penchant for making puzzling and stubborn political missteps.

For instance, this was Georgia's map following the 2000 Census when the Democrats still controlled the state legislature. This map is worse than any map the southern Republicans have proposed, so I don't want to hear jack shit from you people about gerrymandering. You're just mad because they currently have more states to do it in than you do.

That aside, you're glossing over the point. If hemming and hawing is about losing black members of Congress, then DWS shouldn't be running in a mostly black district to preserve her career and kick out an additional black member of Congress, should she? No, because as I said, this isn't about losing blacks in Congress; it's about losing seats Democrats don't have to compete against Republicans for.

How about we get federal legislation on the books to outlaw gerrymandering everywhere?

There is nothing wrong with these districts. Atlanta is where most people live in Georgia. There should be a lot of districts there.

That is false. Illinois, California, Maryland all carved out majority minority districts in their current maps.

Everything is wrong with those districts. They should be compact and stay within city and county borders whenever possible. They shouldn't have "fingers" and "tentacles" sticking out everywhere to pack in additional Democratic voters and lump rural conservatives in with urbanites.

Why then is Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL), a white Jewish woman, running for reelection in a new majority black district instead of bowing out and supporting black candidates? The reason is simple. It's never been about losing black members in Congress. It's been about losing easy Democratic seats in Congress.

It all began in 1995 in Texas with Tom Delay getting the GOP legislature to gerrymander congressional districts in mid-decade.

The GOP started it, the Dems followed suit, and here we are 30 years later all looking like shit.
