Russians Say Syria Rebels Guarantee Security of Its Facilities There

By Thomas Grove. Dec 8, 2024

Syrian rebel leaders have guaranteed the security of Russian military installations in the country, as well as diplomatic buildings, Russians briefed on the situation said Sunday.

Russia has maintained a naval hub at the Mediterranean port of Tartus and the Khmeimim air base in northwestern Syria since Moscow's military helped President Bashar al-Assad claw back the majority of the country, after nationwide protests that erupted in 2011 threatened his rule. The fall of the Assad regime threatens to limit Russia's ability to project power in the Middle East. Russian state media reported Sunday that Assad had been granted asylum in Russia.

Why would the Syrian rebels do that?

So Putin outsmarted our State Department. The whole point of getting rid of Assad was to get the Russians out of Syria.

That and getting the Christian population exterminated by the radical Sunni Muslims.

Russia lost main interest in Syria realising that nothing must prevent them getting the result in ex Ukraine that they most want.

Looks like Russia has won again by not falling into the trap of over extending itself .

It has repeated the same conservative tactics shown in east Ukraine and then in the Kursk area when they correctly refused to weaken their front line by pulling brigades back into Russia defensively .

Top marks again to the strategically minded Mr Pooty and his pals .

I have more than a feeling that Erdogan and Pooty sorted it all beforehand with total accuracy .

Alawites do not believe in daily Muslim prayers (salah). The central tenet of Nusayrite creed is their belief of Ali ibn Abi Talib being an incarnation of God. Nusayrite testimony of faith translates as "There is no God but Ali."

Al-Assad family is affiliated with the Alawite sect, a syncretic sect with links to early Shi'ism.

They allowed Assad to fall and made a deal with the new devil.

If agreements include Russia keeping its naval base and its air force bases in Khmeimim , Latakia and Tarsus, they lose ZILCH .

Probably depends on Erdogan acting with both US and Russia .

A little bit too sophisticated for you, methinks .

Realpolitik
Geo Political strategy .
Spring to mind .

Yes, it does appear that Russia betrayed Assad the man. Turkey works with Israel to achieve Greater Israel, and Russia looks the other way.

Would Putin trade Assad for his bases in Syria?

"The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the Russian authorities were taking all 'necessary steps to establish contact in Syria with those capable of ensuring the security of military bases'.

"Earlier, a source in the Kremlin told Russian state media that the Syrian opposition leaders had agreed to guarantee the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions in Syria.

"The two bases hold an outsized importance to Russia: the Tartus facility gives Vladimir Putin access to a warm water port, while Moscow has used the Khmeimim airbase as a staging post to fly its military contractors in and out of Africa."

The CIA wants to balkanized Syria and will give the Northeastern region , wherein the oil fields are, to Israel.

Turkey helped the Coup d' Etat because it wants the Kurds to have their own region in Syria rather than demanding one in Turkey.

Saudi Arabia helped because it wants the Sunnis to control Syria.

Would Putin trade Assad for his bases in Syria?
Of course he would.

Putin gets to rescue his trapped forces, al-Julani gets to have a show trial and public execution of Assad.

The real question is would the Islamists stick to the deal after they get what they want...

Perhaps Putin's forces aren't trapped in the conventional sense?

Russia Puts Military Bases In Syria On "State Of High Alert"; Will Putin Move To Tobruk Or Stay Put In Tartous?

"Meanwhile, as per BBC citing Russian media, Kremlin officials have been in touch with representatives of 'the Syrian armed opposition.'

"The state TV claimed that opposition leaders had assured the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions in Syria.
