As a therapist who has started the commitment process many times guardianship has nothing to do with an involuntary commitment. As a mandatory reporter I have to start the process when I see a credible threat to harm self or others. I notify the police ChildLine human services etc. The patient is examined and held for up to 5-7 days. Then discharged or held longer. Its reviewed by a mental health judge periodically. It fails because all a patient has to do is tell the judge he feels better. Hes out and will be back in a few months
Guardianship is civil process that gives another person durable power of attorney
