Tonight Hombre and I watched, yet again, "To Kill a Mockingbird" set in depression era rural America. The film itself is more than 60 years old.
We've often talked of restoring basic traditional American values as a worthy goal and that movie, one of the truly great films of our lifetime, portrayed so many of those.
To kill a mockingbird was portrayed as a sin because the mockingbird harmed nothing or no one but simply brought pleasure to all through its songs.
These days so many have no such concept in their hearts but put politics first and foremost as the most important thing and that provides license to figuratively kill or denigrate or malign those of the 'wrong political party' who are attempting to do nothing but good for all.
The movie made clear that a person's dignity and self respect--i.e. ability to pay his/her own way and hold his/her head up--were every bit as important and necessary to allow him/her as was providing what he/she needed.
A child's thoughtful reasoning was enough to soften the hearts and passions of those intent on doing harm to another and peacefully diffusing the situation.
And when a mentally challenged young man almost certainly inadvertently killed the angry and hateful assailant intent on taking revenge by harming or killing two young children, the town sheriff realized justice had already been done and to arrest and try that young man would have been in itself a sin. Just as to kill a mockingbird would be a sin.
I want to return to the values of that kind of culture. I believe we have a current administration who also wants that.
I pray that more and more people will choose to help them make it happen.
Good night USMB.
