That would be this country, Freaky. Other countries prioritize a public rail system. We built a huge interstate highway system in the 50's to transport military equipment and troops quickly across the country. When that became outmoded within years, it was natural to let cars use that system..and it became the defacto standard of transport. But while the automobile is a step above the horse and mobile...it isn't fast...or efficient. Just drive through parts of Eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico where it's a crapshoot whether the rest area or gas station will actually be open.
