ARRESTING OFFICER IN FREDDIE GRAY CASE CHOOSES BENCH TRIAL

BY JULIET LINDERMAN
ASSOCIATED PRESS

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A police officer charged in the Freddie Gray case chose Tuesday to stand trial before a judge rather than a jury, eliminating a potential wild card in the divisive and emotionally charged case.

Officer Edward Nero was one of three officers who arrested Gray when he made eye contact with one of them and took off running in a high-crime area in April 2015. The officers took Gray, a 25-year-old black man, into custody and he was placed in the back of a police van, where he was critically injured during a 45-minute trip to a nearby police station.

He died a week later, sparking protests and fueling the Black Lives Matter movement, becoming a rallying cry in the growing national conversation about the treatment of black men by police. On the day of his funeral, rioting and looting broke out and a city-wide curfew was imposed as the National Guard rolled in to help restore order.

Nero, one of six officers charged, faces assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office charges. His trial is scheduled to begin Thursday and is expected to last about five days. The trial is seen as a bellwether case for the other two arresting officers who face the same charges. They have all pleaded not guilty.

Nero is the second officer to stand trial. Late last year, a jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision in the case against Officer William Porter, who checked on Gray several times after he was put in the police van.

If I disagree with your position in this issue I inevitably will be regarded by some here as a stereotypical White NAACP advocate and denounced as a "cop-hater" and a "Liberal." But the question I have for you, and for all who share your perception, is what did that Freddie Gray individual do to deserve what happened to him? Who did he harm?

It is relevant to mention here that shortly before reading your message I came across the report of another random assassination of a cop in Kansas City and the question of WHY? comes immediately to mind. Maybe you'd care to comment on that issue as well.

So, let's say I don't disagree with your feelings about Obama's choice of Attorney General, let's get back to the Freddie Gray issue and the cops cleaning up trash. What are your thoughts on the trash cleaner (possibly two of them) who is looking at a long prison term? And how about the cops, possibly decent individuals, who are being (possibly undeservedly) assassinated?

Political correctness is not the problem, although a lot of it is nothing but pandering nonsense and should be ignored. The problem is the drug war which has transformed our civilian police into something we neither want nor need them to be. With the exception of availability to minors, drug abuse is not a law-enforcement issue. It is a medical issue and should be dealt with as such.

That lesson was clearly and effectively taught by the destructive folly of alcohol prohibition. We obviously haven't learned anything from that lesson.
