Yes, it was against property owners. They got taxed. If storm drainage got corrected and people "benefited" from it, they ALSO got taxed.

Ahh, so we're not a police state yet but are inching toward one. Possibly. It seems more that 1) people are giving up freedom for the illusion of security. The post-Boston Marathon bombing actions is an example. 2) There are many political asshats who support, for one reason or another, a more authoritarian government in order to impose their agenda upon others be it banning abortion, guns or soda pop.

Speaking of taxes...Remember the incident in Kentucky about a year ago when the fire dept stood around and watched a family's house burn down because the owner hadn't paid a special (optional evidently) tax covering the FD? Of course this was a local event, not federal, but a tax is a tax. Also, today's proposed Republican Obamacare replacement calls for a 'penalty' of 30% of an insurance premium if you let your insurance lapse. Since it is not called a 'mandate' or a 'tax' I suppose adherents of repeal will support it. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I wont support that.

TN I don't know if the proposal of 30% penalty is recurring monthly if you don't, or can't, pay your premium for some 63 days (I think). When I signed up for Medicare at 71 I didn't sign up for part D because I took no meds. So now I have to pay a monthly LEP (Late Enrollment Payment) every bloomin' month for the rest of my life to Humana for going a couple years without a drug plan. I thought it was the right thing to do by not signing up when I didn't need it. So now when I read of this 30% 'penalty', I think of the recurring monthly hit, but it could just be a one-time hit. We'll see.

Morally principled. Commendable. I wish more people were. For most, almost is good enough. Americans need to stop settling and demand better from our government employees. Stop the moral decay.

Agreed. Enough of the "entitlement" idea, enough of affirmative action, enough of white guilt, enough of just giving people jobs because it's PC to do it. Time to demand higher qualifications, education and performance regardless of race.
