They couldn't even sink an unarmed unguarded Cargo vessel. If you think "anything" dangerous or even "suspicious" is getting within a couple hundred miles of one of our Carriers you are absolutely delusional. Iran is not foolish enough to attack a Carrier task force Flag ship or any of the others. They are close enough to Tehran to cause enormous Damage very quickly and Tehran does not want us to bring the War to their doorstep, their economy is already in shambles.

The only thing getting in the way of Japan building an army for the sake of "defending other allies" (aka war) is their own Constitution. they aren't banned from doing so. As a matter of fact they recently (pre Trump) reinterpreted it and expanded it's meaning. So, there are no laws barring Japan from creating a huge military force, they don't by their own choice.
