The global petroleum catastrophe caused by Iran in the strait .... Has highlighted the need for alternative energy and alternative transportation.

One proposal is to develop a great pipeline that spans the distance without hitting the ocean at all.

If you look at a map of the straight you can imagine pretty much where the pipeline would go.

My question is this.... If a hostile player will attack gigantic oil freighters effectively enough either to sink them or cripple them what would stop them from dropping a missile or a bomb on any pipeline?

Am I missing something?

The only thing I can say is that redundancy is a good thing to have.

If rail, sea, and pipeline are all three up and running, it's very unlikely that anyone could completely take out all three at once.

An attack on one gives a chance to respond to protect the other two.

Time is a precious commodity too.

Pipelines can be built underground.
You beat me to it. A pipeline can be protected in ways a ship simply can’t. Pipelines can be buried — even buried deep — and the associated buildings, like pumping stations, can be reinforced, surrounded by berms, or even partially underground. Those are things you just can’t do with a ship.

Now, I’m not saying a pipeline couldn’t be attacked, but the cost and difficulty of destroying it would be far higher. That increase in expense and effort could make large‑scale attacks far less likely, and it would certainly strain Iran’s resources if they tried to target it consistently.

Why has there been no condemnation of Iran for violating international law by blocking the Strait of Hormuz to neutral shipping?

Well, a few thoughts:
  1. A pipeline to some far-distant shore is a lot harder to hit than a giant tanker strolling within a few miles of your own shoreline.
  2. Iran's ability to keep continuing to launch military strikes that far away are seriously degraded.
  3. Iran's ability to see stuff going on far beyond their horizon has also been badly damaged, so, the only way to even know what, where or when would be if some other country like Russia was feeding them the intel.
  4. If Iran starts bombing other country's industrial complexes, they will only force these countries to take collective military action against Iran, and this only further-strengthens Trump and the USA's position in getting involved with Iran in the first place.
