This isn't exactly a mystery.
Iran has been telling us for 40+ years that they would close the Strait if attacked. It's their strategic ace in the hole.

Israel has never sent any military to fight because it would incite the entire Muslim world to war against us. They do provide intelligence and logistic aid.
