Actually, he wasn't smart enough to realize WHY Republicans appointed pro-Roe justices. Let's not forget, the Roe Majority was Five Eisenhower and Nixon appointees with two democrats joining in.

Roe was decided because the abortion laws at the time were unworkable and largely being ignored. It wasn't even really controversial at the time. It was only after the Evangelicals needed a new issue to get asses into pews after segregation wasn't selling that this became an issue. But even then, Republicans were smart enough to pay lip service to the rubes, but not indulge them.
