Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead

Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
And one more drink fool, will drown you

Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

During CNN's coverage of the breaking news, they made mention he was supposed to meeting his 3 kids later on. So he was shooting up heroin before spending time with his kids?

Thank goodness somebody died, CNN woulda been airing that crappy non-news Bourdain show all day instead.

Callous? Insensitive? Cruel? ...Ya, and being on heroin with your kids isn't.

I always wonder why it's "tragic" when a rich actor who can get all the help in the world dies of a drug overdose and it's no big deal when a kid who runs away from an abusive home dies in the street of a drug overdose.

Seems to me we have out priorities ass backwards.

**** this guy I say.

Don't assume I read the entire thread.

The first few posts fawning over this guy were enough to piss me off.

You've got it wrong. The grief is for the contribution the departed made to society, not the drug overdose itself. We cannot afford to mourn every drug overdose. We don't have the capacity. Neither do we as a society have the capacity to mourn every death of every individual.

But when the talented die, when the familiar die, when the, to be base about it, celebrity dies, it is fitting and proper for those who appreciated the talent to feel the loss.

I don't see actors as contributing much.

Well, those of us who are more sophisticated and cultured do. But I'll bet you mourned the loss of a NASCAR driver or a professional wrestler.

What a ******* condescending prick you are.

Don't watch NASCAR
Don't watch wrestling

If you think some fat sloppy guy pretending to be someone else is a contribution to society then I think you should be looking a little bit more at your own issues

So you are not a patron of the arts. Your world outlook reflects that. Narrow of thought and shallow of compassion, you are a sterling example of what happens when one does not experience enough life to know better.

Look! There's a big shiny thing!

that should keep him enthralled for a while.

Truly. I'll never understand people who attempt to mock, shame and belittle not only those who mourn, but the object of their admiration.

He was an amazing actor, AND director. I knew from the first time I saw PSH that he was going to be someone to keep an eye on, and I was right.

Losing him hurts, and I really don't give a damn that they disagree. Just makes them look petty.

Modern day American glorifies drug use so those celebrities that die of drugs are glorified too. They are made into heroes for the young. To be admired.

If you polled 1,000 people on Friday and asked if they knew Phillip Seymour Hoffman had a drug problem, I would bet next month's paycheck that fewer than 2% had any idea.

You are making an assumption in the post mortem that is not only inappropriate but wrong. Americans don't glorify drug use. Americans don't glorify those taken by drug abuse. No one admires the addict.

Americans do recognize talent and artistry.
