Pentagon reportedly pulling jets, anti-missile guns out of Middle East

Note quite true.

In the 1973 Yom Kippur War Israel faced massive shortages of military hardware and the U.S. airlifted a vast amount as part of "Operation Nickel Grass".

In fact, it is. The 1948 War of Independence, the 1956 Suez Crisis, and the 1967 Six-Day War were all won by Israel while under US arms embargo.

It wasn't until after the sweeping victory of 1967 against vastly superior forces that America realized that Israel wasn't just going to disappear (the must fervent hope of the US State Department) and had to grudginly acknowledge that Israel had to be treated as a ally nation.

Of course, the fact that the Israeli-built Nesher fighter jet, having proved itself superior to anything in the Soviet armory, were a direct commercial competition to the F-4 fighter bomber, was a key factor in the decision to begin selling arms to Israel.
