Plenty of good paying jobs and a strong economy always provide obstacles to military recruiting.

I suspect terms like 'weakest' and "smallest size" and "lowest qualifications" in comparison today with 1944 are misleading. Three years of drafting and recruiting after Pearl Harbor had depleted the overall attributes of the classes of 1944 and 1945.

Increased pay and better career opportunity pathways would result in better recruits.

Arguably there is no Communism being practised anywhere on the planet by any important country.

Heard of North Korea and Cuba?

China and Vietnam are still overtly Communist in their ideology, but they have at least been smart enough to recognize that full-blown socialism does not work and have opted for relatively market-based economies.
