Oreos may be as addictive as cocaine, morphine

Every day, the 30,000 people of Archer Daniels Midland Company turn crops into renewable products that meet the demands of a growing world. At more than 265 processing plants, we convert corn, oilseeds, wheat and cocoa into products for food, animal feed, industrial and energy uses. We operate the world’s premier crop origination and transportation network, connecting crops and markets in more than 140 countries on six continents.

i pity anyone who thinks any business is in business to promote anything but themselves and their profit margins....your food supply is very controlled....for profit...
Ummm...duh.

Well, maybe that explains why I'm not an Oreo fan.

I was in a car wreck a few years ago, and got banged up a bit. They gave me morphine in the ER...nothin'. Didn't do anything for me.

I seem to lack the morphine/Oreo receptor.

Dave, just curious. Are you by any chance a redhead? Redheads are more difficult to 'numb'.

"Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do," co-author Joseph Schroeder, an associate professor of neuroscience at Connecticut College in New London, Conn., said in a press release. "It may explain why some people can't resist these foods despite the fact that they know they are bad for them."

Researchers tested rats' affinity for the chocolatey sandwich cookie in several lab experiments. Co-author Jamie Honohan explained that Oreos were chosen not only for their taste, but because they have high amounts of fat and sugar and are marketed heavily in areas where people tend to have lower socioeconomic status and higher obesity rates."

I never liked Oreos, too salty. Nevertheless, this illustrates how the food industry likes to make prepared food not for consumption in as much as to generate cash.

I don't think this study is surprising. I think most of us have been aware for a very long time that processed food has a lot of added sugar because it causes people to buy it more, both sugar and salt. I keep neither sugar nor salt in my kitchen, in my home. Still, inadvertently, I get it in processed food--things you don't even think of as having sugar, have sugar. Just about everything has salt added.

They are both addictive.

No wonder my son likes Oreos so much.

somehow the op's oreo's have now morphed into the ills of the world or at least this society....

i wonder about the inner cities and when will they be dealt with and how? can we really bribe them with oreo's?

We might be able to go out to the boon-docky places and do a good business in 'turn in your guns for Hostess Ho Ho's and Twinkies,' with the threat of impending disaster: they will be discontinued again, and this time for real. :D

are meth and crack the same thing? i get varying answers on that....to be honest.....i have no problem with legalizing it all.....right up to heroin...then let darwin's theory run damn wild....oxie heads go quickly....meth heads will linger for a while...

the fearful thing of meth and oxie's it really knows no boundaries...no social class....no religion....we are having a problem in the family with a pill head....he was raised in a very religious home with values but no boundaries....and now he is running pretty wild....attempted to make his grandmother give him his trust fund....things like that...but my point is....this can happen to anyone....i ask my son why he has never done any of it...his answer was simple...too afraid of the addiction...we never lied to him about drugs....if you lie to them about pot and they smoke some and dont meltdown then they figure you have lied about it all....we told him the drugs we did at one time and why we dont do certain ones....when freebasing came in....i got out of that scene totally....just didnt need the addiction.....but damn i miss ludes ....

Crack is made from cocaine.

No, I'm a grayhead. Used to be brown.

Other painkillers like codeine seem to work fine, although outside a surgery once, I've never had anything very strong.

He is numb from the neck up to begin with.

The Dollar Stores around here carry Cokes bottled in Mexico. Made with sugar, instead of HFCS. They taste much better than the domestic Cokes.

Sugar is actually beginning to become cheaper than HFCS again, due to all the use of corn for ethanol. Supply and Demand cycles again prove to be a stronger force than political will.

My problem is M&M's w/peanuts
Maybe there's an M&M Anonymous group I can join
There is, but unfortunately, it's on an island more remote than Pitcairn's Island. Yo ho ho and a bottle of.... coconut milk.

:badgrin::badgrin::badgrin:

it is not really the sugar that is killing us...its the carb that quickly convert to sugar....

I break up and snort an Oreo every morning.

I can go through a package of Oreos and a half gallon of milk in a single sitting, but no one would ever call me fat. I admit, I have certain cravings, but I have no addictions other than possibly USMB.

Not sure about a comparison to heroin and cocaine, but alcohol is mostly sugar. Many people in alcohol rehab eat huge amounts of sugar to replace what they have lost when they stopped drinking. Many alcoholics are also diabetics.

I have never tried heroin or cocaine. Somehow I would like to imagine they are better than an Oreo. If they are not, what a waste of time and money for the addicts. Next time someone hits you up for a buck on the street, hand him an Oreo and see what happens. :D
