Only 4 states have unified Democratic control

Congressional Dems pushed back the vote for minority leader to November 30th. Pelosi has been speaker/minority leader for 14 years, a longer tenure than even Tip O'Neill.

For obvious reasons, the party is looking for at young Midwestern candidates to replace Pelosi. But, she's good at raising money in California so Dems are nervous about replacing her.

50 House Dem women wrote a letter urging Pelosi to stay, saying that young women and girls "need to see the first woman speaker- and every woman member of Congress- standing firm in the halls of power, continuing to fight for their rights, their dignity, and their dreams."

But, the lesson of 2016 is that optics aren't as important as they used to be. Focusing on optics over substance isn't going to be fruitful.
