The sad thing is, that - long before COVID and "remote work," - federal employees already had the reputation for doing as little work as possible, and having a callous attitude toward the public who relied on them.

I came out of the Army full of hope of concentrating on studies with little financial concern, because I had already paid the price and earned the GI Bill benefits. I found out the hard way, that the federal workers responsible for fulfilling that promise were far more diligent in coming up with ways to avoid accountability for not doing their jobs, that in actually doing them.

After a semester in which I finally realized in November that my VA money would come to me "when they get to it," I finally realized that I would have to work my way through for a second time, and when and if the money I was owed came through, it would be a bonus on which I could not rely.

This was in 1984, well before the Chinese Wuhan Institute of Virology had even constructed the laboratory in which the Wuhan Flu was created.
