The Walker-Warnock race and the Lake-Hobbs Race will convince them that backing by Trump does not ensure a victory. They have that right. But they may also be convinced that a Trump primary run does not assure a victory for Trump.

It is not impossible for Trump to lose the primary in 2024. But, if the Republicans over-estimate the probability of someone else defeating him, then several of them will want to vie for the chance to run against Joe BIden. Then we will have a repeat of the 2020 primary, with Trump winning a large plurality, and gaining ground each time a hopeless candidate drops out, and their voters go to Trump as a second choice.

Republican predictions of Trump’s vulnerability will amount to a self-defeating prophesy, rather than a self-fulfilling one.

Going after DeSantis was a blunder for Trump. Doing it so soon before the election magnified it. The GOP old guard has one chance: Unite behind DeSantis in a way that will not annoy Trumpers. Say that Trump served us well, but DeSantis would have two terms, Trump will better serve as a mentor, etc.

They will not do that. The old guard’s ego is as large as Trump’s, they just hide it better. None of them will throw their support to DeSantis until their own election chances become obviously hopeless.

Trump and DeSantis will never be contenders together for the same prize.

Which one goes down in flames?

Who fkn cares lately?

Desantis ran for Governor for 4 years for Florida, not two. I will be very pissed off if he, Ron leaves the office vacant in an attempt to be the next President. President Trump needs 4 more years, do he can gut the Federal government of all the corruption of the FBI, CIA, IRS and any other 3 letter organization. Then have Nancy Piglosi and Chick Schumer brought in and examine their cell phone and find out the collusion against US citizens who have been arrested and jail by those miscreants.

I disagree OP, I believe that the Republican's obsession for power and winning will focus their minds like neverbefore.

I'm already seeing the Establishment coalescing behind DeathSentence already.

In any case, this should be thee most entertaining political season ever!

Trump-backed candidates =/= Trump. He backed a lot of very lightly credentialed people just because they supported his stolen election ideas. Doesn't mean that he lost all appeal to Republican voters, just that they won't for people just because they also support Trump.

The Republicans know that, or they would be announcing their candidacy left and right right and righter so they can get started fund-raising.

If the Republicans are stupid enough to run Trump again in 2024 they will lose the election.
