On Sunday Tehran said it was not releasing businessman Siamak Namazi, 44, and remained silent about former FBI agent Robert Levinson, 67, according to the Washington Post. Namazi is an Iranian-American who was arrested in October while visiting a friend in Tehran, where he had reportedly conducted business for the past decade. It was not clear why he was arrested, and his family expressed surprise he was not among four other Americans freed as part of a swap for seven Iranians on Saturday.

Officials believe former FBI agent and CIA contractor Robert Levinson, who went missing on an Iranian island in 2007, is being held by Tehran, but it is unclear whether he is still alive. Levinson was not among four Americans exchanged for Iranian prisoners​

Levinson went missing on the Iranian island of Kish in 2007 while working as a CIA contractor. Iranian officials deny any knowledge of his whereabouts, and despite the FBI offering a $5 million reward for information leading to Levinson's return, U.S. officials have said they are unsure if he is still alive. The U.S. State Department said "those who wished to depart Iran have left."

A fifth American, language student Matthew Trevithick, was released separately on Saturday after being detained since late 2015. The prisoner swap comes as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and other diplomats are working to see through the implementation of a nuclear agreement reached last summer between Tehran and the five permanent members of the U.N. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made the remark Tuesday during a press briefing in Washington D.C., saying officials "have reason to believe that [Levinson] is no longer is in Iran, and that's why we continue to press for information about his whereabouts."

Levinson, 67, reportedly went missing on the Iranian island of Kish in 2007 while working as a CIA contractor. Iranian officials deny any knowledge of his whereabouts, and despite the FBI offering a $5 million reward for information leading to Levinson's return, U.S. officials have said they are unsure if he is still alive.

The comment comes three days after five Americans being detained by Tehran were exchanged in a prisoner swap for seven Iranians. The exchange came as the European Union and United States began lifting economic sanctions on Iran as part of a nuclear accord reached last year.

"One of the things that was actually secured in this agreement was a specific commitment from the Iranians to help us locate Mr. Levinson," Earnest said, later adding that U.S. negotiators will use "the channel that has now been opened to secure the release of those individuals that we know are being held by Iran unjustly ... to try to gather info about Mr. Levinson's possible whereabouts."

Israeli political insider Josef Olmert, now adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina, said he shares her sense of betrayal. “One Jew would never be allowed to in the way of the ‘historic’ agreement with Iran,” he blogged in the Times of Israel, calling on American Jewish groups who support the nuclear agreement “to look us in the collective white of our eyes and explain how come the administration, which they so support, allowed this outrage of abandoning one poor Jew to his fate.”

Olmert told VOA the fact the United States failed to secure Levinson’s release is viewed by many as a U.S. gesture to appease Iran. “Moreover, it’s an indication, on top of others, of the resentment of the Obama administration towards Israel,” he said. But Jeffrey Salkin, author and senior rabbi at Temple Solel in Hollywood, Florida, cautions against what he calls “an Obama-phobic narrative” in the wake of the Iran deal. "There is no reason to believe that at all, and certainly I would not support whatsoever any narrative that the Obama administration threw him under the bus for his ethnicity or for any other reason,” Salkin said.
