All of what you say is true, but should they be, for a lack of a better word, "punished" for the decisions made by those who visit? I don't believe the number of people who "lose it all" is that great, most folks who go are not degenerate gamblers willing to risk all they own. Like you, I too have a kick ass time when I go to Vegas, even though I do not gamble to speak of. Is there really any difference between the guy who drops a couple of grand in Vegas and the guy who drops the same money or more visiting the plethora of amusement parks in Orlando? Not in my opinion. I consider both places part of the "entertainment industry" and consider neither necessary. But both employ millions of people and, if not abused, a lot of fun for people like us.

Ultimately I think that Obama could have used more general terms rather than pointing to a particular "industry."

Like I said in the OP, I don't like gambling nor do I like casinos. However...

Vegas is entertainment. It is no different than music or sports, with one very big caveat. It also sucks in a lot of capital from abroad. A lot of foreign gamblers come to Las Vegas. Wealthy Asians fly in on private jets to play baccarat. Gaming companies have seen a decline in their quarterly profits when they have lost to these whales.

The caveat is that gambling preys on the weaknesses of people. However, it is better to have it out in the open, giving the money to American corporations than under the table to the mob.
