Carson was absolutely the last funny late night host.

Jay Leno was sort of OK. No Carson, but not bad, and Letterman had his moments even if he seemed a bit mean. And Conan O'Brien was OK sometimes, I used to watch him a little when he came on, but Carson was both politically neutral and dignified. He routinely had a level of talent and stardom on his show that Late Night these days never have. Carson had friends and guests on that litterally created and defined Hollywood.

My interest in last night waned after Carson retired. I have Johnny's last 2-3 Tonight Shows saved on video tape. His very last show he just kinda sat there and talked on a stool, it wasn't really much of a show, but a farewell, but the night before, his last real show, he had both Bette Midler on (who left Johnny in tears) who sang to him, and Robin Williams, who at his peak might have been the funniest comic to ever live.

I watched Jay Leno for maybe a few days or weeks with his depressing opening sequel of curtain after curtain opening, and I would check out Letterman or O'Brien on occasion, but none of these people could touch Johnny. Maybe had Johnny never lived, they might have been seemed better.

If you have never seen Johnny's home, you need to check it out. I usually don't go much for modern homes but this one was one of the best. It sat at the very end of Malibu beach jutting out over the ocean right where the coastline turns northward, and is one of the nicest homes I've ever seen. Inside the house is a waterfall and arboretum, glass ceilings, an elevator, and offices and parking just for the staff with room to park almost 50 cars, in fact, a road passes through the property with more property across the highway.
