There have been races in the early 2000's decided in December.

Debates are fine. They are not the only time where an electorate can view the candidate however.

Would you rather have the media lean toward the ignorant? Would it make you feel better if the press were to mis-spell words and all?

Not so long ago, the news media would hire editors who would double check for spelling mistakes and typographical errors in a journalist's news articles.
