Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston responded to U.S. president Donald Trump's tariff increase on Saturday.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston
has outlined his response to tariffs imposed on Canada by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Saturday, Trump signed an executive order that imposes a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods entering the U.S., including a 10 per cent tariff on oil and gas.
In a press release sent just hours after the tariffs were confirmed, Houston said that as of Monday, tolls at the Cobequid Pass will double for commercial vehicles entering from the U.S.

He said the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation will be directed to remove all U.S. alcohol from store shelves effective this Tuesday. That totals more than 400 products, including beer, wine, spirits and coolers.

For the 2023-24 fiscal year, sales of U.S. products imported from the U.S. totalled $18 million of the NSLC's $753 million in sales on alcohol, said a liquor corporation spokesperson. These products made up seven per cent of the NSLC's number of alcohol listings.

Business deals with the U.S. will also be curtailed.

"We will look for opportunities to cancel existing contracts and will maintain the option to reject bids outright because of President Trump's unlawful tariffs."

Houston goes on to say...

He said going forward the province will focus on "finding new markets here at home with programs like Nova Scotia Loyal, focus on developing our own resources, eliminate inter-provincial trade barriers and, finally, of course, look for international diversification."

The statement also said it's remarkable to "find ourselves at odds with our best friend and neighbour."

If they would like to send me that Kentucky Bourban and Tennessee whiskey they won't be selling anymore, I'll dispose of it for them over the next several years.

Canadian Whiskey is pretty smooth, I'll admit that.

They can't tariff us & thunk we wont tariff them back.

Tomorrow Trump will raise the tariffs to 10,000%

Then this shit should come to a reasonable end in about 2 days.

Just ******* WORK WITH US & we can reach a reasonable deal!
i'll drink to that........~S~

Trump wont let this linger. He did it in his first term.

Raise tariffs massively and they'll come to the table to work out a deal.

I wouldn't be surprised if this all plays out by tomorrow morning.

Trump will ride these tariffs for at least six months to a year I presume. There is a strong incentive to keep them permanent though since the U.S has so much debt and the economic consequences of doing so are not very high and the following tax and regulation decrease coupled with cutting U.S debt will seem worth it.

The permanent is the fear of most and the risk of them being increased even. Trump could even funnel money into particular segments of the U.S economy from the tariffs themselves, share some of it directly with Americans in other forms.

Canada should have been part of the technology boom and evolution, we should have long ago opened up the nation to banking competition in particular so that so many more start-ups could be funded.

Instead Canada protects a small oligopoly of banking institutions and we all pay the price in so many ways.

This approach will only encourage Trump to retaliate against certain provinces for "special tariffs". Say, "40% of imported automobiles from Ontario", or "10% extra for resources from B.C" etc.

There are already plenty of tariffs and protectionism being employed by countries, this new tariff isn't any different other than it is more blunt and effective.

Canada has had decades to change course. Japan doesn't have near our resources, they are an island and look at how more advanced they are. Canada had a huge head start but Japan post-WWII decided to embrace their best citizens while Canadas unaccountable covert police state just suppressed and enforced a caste.

Canadians can't afford the taxes on beer, liquor and cigarettes already, LOL, watch what happens to that industry in Canada. LOL

Canadians are taxed excessively. Just sales taxes in BC (provincial and GST) account for 30% of the cost of an item. That doesn't include taxes that are levied on the producers and passed on to the consumer. SMH--we fought a revolution over that garbage.

I have three liters of Crown in my pantry. When that's gone, I'll just switch to scotch or Irish whiskey. Canada has made my ability to enjoy their country difficult for the last four years with their covid crap and Turdeau's BS. I won't be spending any money up there for a while.
