People don't enlist when the job market is good.

More importantly, they don't enlist when the job market is good, and the country has been fighting a largely pointless war for the last 20 years.

Every "generation" in the military has said that, and has been saying that for decades. I remember in the mid-1980s when it became a thing to refer to the newer recruits as "Pepsi-Generation Marines", as they seemed different than we had been just a few years earlier. That is simply how it is.

I can imagine Andy Brown said the same thing about how weak the NHL players were when he retired.
