'No Separation Of Church And State': Trump's Religious Liberty Commission Reveals Its Priorities

That was the case prior to the ratification of the U.S. constitution.
Horsecrap.

Almost all states carried their supported religion into the new Union. As an example, Connecticut collected taxes to support the congregationalist church through in 1818 when it ratified it's own constitution and chose not to include it.

In all that time, no state supported religion or the practice of supporting them was EVER CHALLENGED IN COURT.
I believe Clarence Thomas is wrong in his analysis.
What you believe does not matter.

Thomas supported his claim and many have argued the same thing.
The constitution is clear it says government shall not sanction one religion. That means government at all levels.
You clearly do not understand the constitution or the 10th amendment.

The concept of Selective Incorporation is not found in the constitution if that is what you are referencing.

That didn't come into play until the 1930's. And it is wrong.

But the constitution does not direct the states in what they can and can't do as long as it does not interfere with the very few duties found in Article II of the Constitution.
