I didn’t head that far east - was about 20 mins west of there. I bet it’s a similar situation to Hot Springs. The businesses along the river/creek had their first level washed out and all the greenery is stripped back to the dirt but those areas away from the bank did ok. There was plenty of supplies stacked up and volunteers weren’t busy handing out to anyone but were there if needed. Lots of businesses are mountain experience based and do not have current bookings though.

People in the military have their orders and their missions. They're not supposed to improvise. Reporting the incident was the correct thing to do. It would be up to their superiors to decide what to do next. Anything else could make them liable for some serious legal charges.

I appreciate your kind response and I know I'm not alone in praying for the best for you folks in in western NC. What you have been saying is similar to what family and friends in the area have told me. I was on the phone with my 86 year old aunt in Alexander on that Friday when her phone went out. I couldn't get in touch with anyone until Monday morning. Never worried so much in my life as I did for those 3 days.
